I've chosen Kwanzaa to be the background for my UU Virtual Fellowship because the principles of Kwanzaa are shared by civilized people throughout the world--explicitly or implicitly. But first, let me give you the 7 Principles and Purposes of the UU Religion: (1) inherent worth and dignity of every person, (2) justice, equity, and compassion in human relations, (3) acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations, (4) free and responsible search for truth and meaning, (5) right of conscience and use of democratic process within our congregations and in our society at large, (6) goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all, and (7) respect for the interdependent web of existence. The 7 Principles of Kwanzaa are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. PARENTAL & INSTITUTIONAL WARNING: The UU religion is not traditional Christianity. Part of why I have my religious/philosophical website totally separate from the rest of my research is so it can be blocked off if deemed necessary, particularly in a K-12 public school setting, when even the most conventional religious views would violate our country's separation of church and state. On the other hand, you may find this website to be of use for comparative world religion classes--a class where I've been an occasional guest lecturer. Some UU's, myself included, consider themselves to be progressive Christians, including all of the Universalists.
Course Description
You'll find readings unique to our denomination in addition to my favorites: process theology, Neo-Confucianism, Lotus Sutra Based Buddhism, Nation of Islam (possibly from 2001-08 only), and the Liberal Islam of Indonesia .
